Nature Peer Review Trial and Debate

    June 2006

Nature is undertaking a trial of a particular type of open peer review. In this trial, authors whose submissions to Nature are sent for peer review will also be offered the opportunity to participate in an open peer review process (see below for explanation). The trial is optional for authors; it will continue in parallel with Nature's usual procedures, and does not affect the likelihood of eventual publication of the submitted work. At the same time as the trial, Nature is running a web debate on peer review, to which we welcome comments from readers. Send a blank email to sign up for weekly updates.

    [...]

At the close of the trial, we will assess the value of public comments overall as well as the practicalities of their inclusion on a longer-term basis. We will publish an account of the trial and our conclusions.

For further details about the trial for authors and reviewers, please go to the question and answer page provided. Further general questions not answered by this list can be directed to the editors. Questions from authors and referees about particular manuscript submissions should be sent to the editor who is handling the manuscript.

    Why not?
Crawling upstream through the references in search of the another method “described previously”, I wondered if the problem of limited space in a publication that squeezes Materials and Methods section still exist nowadays. Surely, a paper in a high-rank journal cannot be bloated to infinity. However, given the ease of data exchange provided by internet and low cost of web publishing, it is tempting to encourage the authors to give access to the detailed protocols used in their work and maybe to the raw data obtained. If a journal could provide web space for uploading of such materials, it would be beneficial both for the peer reviewing process and for post-publication impact of a paper. Adding an option of asking questions and making comments (as in web logs) would allow the referees to communicate with the authors confirming unclear points or requesting additional information. That would certainly improve the efficiency of the peer review process and therefore increase the quality of the paper final version.
I am positive that many authors will welcome such option. The possibility to provide extra details on methods and to clarify any issues ambiguous to referees before their official comments are sent to the editor clearly increases the chances of publication. Keeping this extra information available will also benefit the reader – no more need to go though “described previously” methods to some (1957) paper.

I am proud of sharing my birth day with Dr. Albert Hofmann, the man who discovered LSD. He is 100 years old today. On this occasion an LSD symposium is held in Basel, Switzerland.

Dr. Hofmann, on the occasion of celebrating the 50th anniversary of his famous bicycle ride:

"You, my dear friends, and millions all over the world who now commemorate the 50th birthday of ergot's child, we all testify gratefully that we got valuable help on the way to what Aldous Huxley said is the end and the ultimate purpose of human life--enlightenment, beatific vision, love. I think all these joyful testimonies of invaluable help by LSD should be enough to convince the health authorities, finally, of the nonsense of the prohibition of LSD and of similar psychedelics."

Sounds kind of too strong for me. But who knows...

A woman walked into the kitchen to find her husband stalking around with a fly swatter.
«What are you doing?» She asked.
    «Hunting Flies» He responded.
    «Oh. Killing any?» She asked.
    «Yep, 3 males, 2 Females» He replied.
Intrigued, She asked: «How can you tell?»
He responded: «3 were on a beer can, 2 were on the phone»

    Arguments and discussions
Thoughts on the way back to the lab from the lunch break

It is stupid to try proving you are right when you cannot clearly formulate at any time during the discussion, WHAT does the opponent actually wants to say. Often the problem is just that both sides say the same with different words. Another frequently occuring situation is when one keeps the discussion without ANY idea, just in the name of contradicting the opponent. Keeping arguing in both cases is a waste of energy and time.
However, in the first case the problem can be sovled by reaching the agreement on the definition of terms.

    Here we go.

No, let it be "This is my first post".

Or more formal "Ahem. This is a test".

Anyway, it is November 2x13, and I just created my LJ.
